King John- Henry II's son- tried to increase taxes on the nobles

Nobles revolted- forced King John to sign an important document

Magna Carta- "Great Charter"

- limited the king's power

- king could not make new laws without asking an assembly of nobles and Church officials

- important because it was the beginning of representative government in English culture

Parliament- assembly of nobles and Church officials

- eventually included wealthier non-nobles

- over time, took over more and more of English government- runs it today
